The Goemulgaw (Tores Strait Islanders) Corporation RNTBC hold native title in trust for the benefit of the people of Mabuiag. 

On 6 July 2000, Drummound J made a positive native title determination in relation to the traditional owners of Mabuiag Island. In that case, the Federal Court of Australia recognised the native title holders’ native title rights and interests. 

Subject to the laws of the Commonwealth and the State of Queensland, the native title rights and interests confer possession, occupation, use and enjoyment of the determination area to the exclusion of all others.
