Wintawari Guruma Aboriginal Corporation’s (WGAC) mining scorecard will be even more important for Rio Tinto after recent revelations the miner signed off on the dumping of Eastern Guruma cultural heritage material at the Darwin rubbish tip in the 1990s.

Fortescue Metals Group has been forced to apologise to an important traditional owner group in Australia’s iron ore heartland after breaking a government-imposed condition which required the company to wait for indigenous elders to be present when a culturally significant site was developed.

Fed up with mining companies that don’t adequately care for their country and cultural heritage, the traditional owners of Australia’s busiest iron ore mining district are taking matters, and drill rigs, into their own hands.

Western Australia’s 45-year-old Aboriginal Heritage Act — the legislation underpinning the preservation and protection of Aboriginal heritage in the state is set to be reviewed.

WA Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt said the review would involve a three-stage public consultation process that would lead to new legislation being introduced into the WA Parliament.
