Traditional land owners in central Queensland through the Barada Barna Aboriginal Corporation (BBAC) have struck a native title project agreement with mining giant BHP for the South Walker Creek mine, southwest of Mackay, in the hopes of securing longstanding intergenerational benefits to their people.

The Barda Bana people have native title over their traditional lands, which covers approximately 3229 square kilometres and are bound between the Connors Range in east, Middlemount in the south, Peak Ranges in the West and Lake Elphingstone in the North.
On 29 June 2016, the Federal Court of Australia dealt with proceedings arising of two applications that native title exists, between the Barada Barna People and the Widi People, in the same area. Both parties reached an agreement, and the Court accepted that agreement in 2016. The Barada Barna people have non-exclusive rights in the determination area.
The Barada Barna Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC aim to provide maintenance and support of Country, traditions, lore, language and culture. Additionally, they provide economic, social and cultural benefits to the Barada Barna People.
