Native title ruling strengthens Koa people’s identity

Western Queensland’s Koa people have had their identity strengthened following a Federal Court decision in Winton.

Koa traditional owner Pamela Hegarty said the native title determination of nearly 865,000 hectares of land and waters near Winton would help provide justice for her ancestors.

Held in the Winton Shire Council Hall, Justice SC Derrington granted the consent determination resolving the six year native title claim first lodged in July 2015.

Grant for Wuthathi Aboriginal Corporation rangers to protect land and sea

A $151,157 grant has been awarded to the Wuthathi Aboriginal Corporation to improve Indigenous ranger services across both land and sea. This new partnership with the Wuthathi Rangers will expand biosecurity surveillance coverage in this high-risk area and strengthen Australia’s frontline biosecurity defence.

Welfare functions suggested for some Alice Springs supermarkets

Lhere Artepe Supermarkets manages the Three IGA neighbourhood supermarkets - Flynn, Old Eastside and Northside in Alice Springs. The native title holders of Alice Springs are the ultimate shareholders of these business. They employ 120 people, inset around $34m a year into the local economy. At any one time they employ 10-20% Aboriginal people.

Lotterywest grant to foster cultural land management in the Pilbara

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Stephen Dawson has announced a Lotterywest grant of $1,445,750 for Pilbara traditional owners to build capacity and capability of cultural land management programs.  

The grant will be used by Pilbara Cultural Land Management Project partner organisations to collaborate and care for both cultural and natural heritage.

Indigenous traditional owners win back Daintree rainforest in historic deal

Eastern Kuku Yalanji people will take formal ownership of the world heritage-listed Daintree tropical rainforest in northern Australia, after the Indigenous traditional owners reached a historic deal with the Queensland government.

The Daintree national park is part of 160,108 hectares (395,467 acres) of land that will be handed back to the traditional owners at a ceremony on Wednesday at Bloomfield, north of Wujal Wujal.

Waanyi elders say new native title determination and ranger program is timely

It is a small parcel of land measuring just 441 square kilometres, but to the Waanyi people in Queensland's Gulf Country it has huge significance. The Federal Court has formally recognised native title over the area between the Northern Territory border and Burketown, giving the Waanyi people rights to negotiate future land use, including for pastoral and mining purposes.
